Consulting Services

Hedgerow Farms will provide over-the-phone project consultations at no charge. With information you provide, we can create a seed mix for your project.

When calling us for a phone consultation, please have prepared the following information:

 

  • Project type (many possibilities: foothill or valley grassland restoration, hedgerows or roadsides, canal or drainage ditch edges, etc.)
  • Project goals
  • Location of site
  • Size of site (acres or square feet)
  • Climate (rainfall, fog, windy, temperature, etc.)
  • Site characteristics (slope, aspect, surrounding landscape attributes, trees present, near urban areas, etc.)
  • Soil conditions (flooded, dry, sandy, clayey, hardpan, rocky, etc.)
  • Irrigation - is the site irrigated? For how long?
  • Current species on site
      - Any natives? Which ones?
      - Weeds? Grasses or broadleaves? Species?
  • Method of planting (broadcast, drill)
  • Specific needs (erosion control, grazing, turf, etc.)
  • Project limitations
  • Any past management (Was the site previously seeded with natives, burned, any past weed control, etc.)
  • Types of weed control available to use (Herbicides, fire, mowing, tilling, grazing, etc.)
  • If it is landscaping, what look is desired (lawn replacement, native meadow)
  • Any specific requests (Species, grass-only, add wildflowers, pollinators, etc.)
